Eligibility

  • Be at least 21 years old upon completion of Police Academy
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • College, Military and/or prior Law Enforcement experience is preferred, but not required
  • Have a valid Driver's License
  • Have an Honorable Discharge from any military service
  • Have no felony convictions
  • Be a United States Citizen
  • Complete a Drug Questionnaire Form
  • Meet other requirements as specified by the Law Enforcement Agency during the pre-employment process

Disclaimer: The following information is meant as a general guideline for the Law Enforcement Application process and is not specific to any one agency. Each agency will have it's own criteria.

1. Written Examination

Applicants will take a written test, which is administered by the respective department. The test is designed to measure an individual's ability in mathematics, reading comprehension, grammar and writing. The test are usually based on a 12th grade difficulty level. Typically a minimum score of 70% is required in each category.

2. Physical Abilities Test   

The Physical Abilities Tests may be an an obstacle course designed to simulate specific activities that may be encountered during an officer's tour of duty. Applicants must show their ability to maneuver through the course with minimal errors. Activities to expect, but not limited to, are running, pushing, climbing,weight drag, window entry and balance

3. Pre-employment Polygraph Examination

Applicants will be given a polygraph examination administered by a qualified Polygraph Examiner. The test will cover criminal activity, drug usage, truthfulness, integrity and employment history.

4. Background Investigation

The background investigation will cover pertinent facts about the applicants character, work history and any criminal or traffic record.

5. Oral Interview

A series of questions will be asked to assess skills in dealing with people, problem solving, communication, initiative and stress tolerance.

6. Psychological Examination

A test and interview with a certified psychologist.

7. Physical Examination

 Applicants will undergo a complete medical and eye examination given by a licensed physician.

8. Department Ride-Along

"Ride-Along" means to be an official passenger in a patrol vehicle, accompanying a Law Enforcement Officer during part of a normal tour of duty. The primary purpose of a police Ride-Along is to provide an opportunity for the applicant to see firsthand the day-to-day workings of law enforcement.
